Virginia Laws Around Car Window Tinting

When it comes to car window tinting, the laws change from year to year. This doesn’t happen all the time but it is important to keep yourself updated regardless.

It is also important to remember that every state has different window tint laws. You must make sure your tint does not exceed the percentage for where you live.

Here are the updated laws for Virginia in 2023.

Side and Rear Windows

There aren’t general tint laws when it comes to your vehicle‘s windows. The percentages of tint you can use change depending on the type of window.

For front side windows, the tint has to let in more than 50% of the light. For back side windows, they must allow more than 35% of light into the car.

When it comes to the rear window, the tint has to let in more than 35% of the sun's light. When it comes to reflectivity, none of your window tints can be more than 20% reflective.

If it was more reflective, there would be a risk of it becoming a distraction. These laws are also there to make sure you can clearly see out of your vehicle.

As well as allowing others to see you in the vehicle if necessary.

Windshield

Some car owners also enjoy upgrading their windshields. If you add tint to the windshield, it’s only allowed to the top of the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

Or the equivalent of 5 to 6 inches from the top of the windshield. In the state of Virginia, red, amber, and yellow tints are strictly prohibited for all windows.

You also need to have dual side mirrors for tinted windows in the back.

Virginia Tint Laws for Trucks and SUVs

It is also important to remember that there are other state-wide restrictions. Window tint laws in Virginia also spread to trucks and SUVs.

For the most part, the above percentages that we discussed apply to trucks and SUVs. Although, this can change depending on how the vehicle is used.

The good news is that all these percentages seem to apply to passenger and multipurpose vehicles. If the vehicle is a commercial vehicle, you may want to do a bit more research.

Virginia Medical Exemption

There are certain instances where auto window tinting is a necessity. This may be the result of a medical condition where you have excess light sensitivity.

This would mean that you need a window tint to allow you to drive. Otherwise, the sunlight might be too harsh, making it hard to see.

Virginia allows a medical exception for those who are medically authorized. This allows them to have their windows tinted to darker shades with sun shading medical authorization.

Their front and rear side windows can be tinted up to 35% of VLT tint. The windshield can also be up to 35% with VLT tint.

You can apply for medical authorization, and if approved, you will get a registration card. This card must be with you in the vehicle at all times as it is proof of this authorization.

If you are stopped without your registration card, you could receive window tint fines.

What Happens If You Don’t Follow the Laws?

A lot of vehicle owners may think that restrictions on tint are silly. But the reality is that most states take this very seriously and enforce the laws.

A police officer has the right to pull over a vehicle if the tint looks too dark. They may also ask about your window tint if they pull you over for a different reason.

For first-time offenders, you will usually receive a ticket for breaking the law. If you have done this repeatedly, you could even face jail time.
